MP blasts KK Council

Nkhotakota Central member of Parliament (MP) Peter Mazizi (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) on Thursday accused the Nkhotakota District Council secretariat of allegedly politicising development projects.

The MP was reacting to a report which the Department of Water and Irrigation Development presented during a full council meeting.

Mazizi: We cannot make progress like this

The report indicated that the council has sunk about 134 boreholes across the district.

In his remarks, Mazizi alleged that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials in the district and council secretariat officials are conducting secret meetings on how to frustrate MPs from the opposition.

“We know that you are having secret meetings on how to frustrate us. But what you have to know is: you are denying our people their rights. We cannot make progress like this!” said the visibly angry MP.

He further alleged DPP officials were used in the distribution of relief items when about 800 households were affected by a storm in January this year. He claimed that an officer responsible for disaster preparedness was unceremoniously transferred after she asked for a report on the distribution exercise.

But Nkhotakota District Council chairperson Manfred Kwanjiwa (DPP) said the allegations lacked evidence. He said politicians do not interfere in the administration of the council.

Said Kwanjiwa: “I don’t know what you are talking about. I have never been involved in such meetings at any point.”

The chairperson advised the legislator to refrain from making allegations, adding that the district can only progress if elected members lay down their political differences for the betterment of Nkhotakota residents.
